sitemap Breyerfest 2010 Sneak Peek

These are horses I'm focusing on wrapping up in time to display at Breyerfest's Artisan's Gallery. Like any artist working for a living, I'm always open to offers at any point - even if I have to say no for some reason nothing offends me I promise, so don't be timid! :) THIS time, I'm letting folks know that all horses here can be spoken for in advance. If a buyer makes me an offer I can't refuse right now they also get the added benefit of possibly specifying some custom details onmarkings before I'm finished. As well as the luxury of waiting to see the horse in person for approval before actually paying at Breyerfest as well, or of arranging time payments - something you can't do so easily in the mad rush of Artisians' Gallery.

Of course I want to be able to display my finishwork and sculptures at Breyerfest but (a) I'm not sure all of these will be done in time and (b) knowing that a buyer is out there would give me the ability to prioritize (for example if you'd be interested in Breyerfest pickup OR conversely if you know it would take a few months to pay off).. SO! That said, if there is someone in this preview below that is calling to you, please feel free to try me. I have some ball park prices I'm thinking off and will release them with more photos the week or so before Breyerfest (unless of course I get one of those offers you can't refuse first). Any offers or inquiries of course can be made to morgen@one-horse.net & artbymorgen@yahoo.com .

Clicking on the outlined pictures will bring up slightly larger images.

Dapple Grey Hazel
(left and below)
Or is that dapple gray… I think the jury is still out on this one. Well many may have seen her on my FB pages but here's the low down on her.. She's got several layers of oils on now and a few more to go to refine a few spots. Then I will be penciling in her details. When I say "layers" of oils, I paint them so thin that they tend to dry within a few hours - in a few days they are scratch-dry. I don't use drying agents mixed with my oils but I've gotten my studio humidity down so that it's positively arid in here and that helps greatly. In real life the grey to black areas have more depth. I've only just gotten my camera and I tried to capture this better but since she hasn't gotten any hairing details yet anyways, I'll just wait on that and hope explaining "she's more contrasty in some spots" will suffice for now? She's a charmer and I've been using an Irish Draught sport horse as my primary color pattern reference for her if you're looking for ideas... ;)

SOLD Iaret in flaxen chestnut (above and left)
You may have noticed a trend in that I've tried to pick "chrome free" colors for the most part for my first finishes of any sculpture and this fiery little lady is no different. I hope to be replacing the primer one on my web site with her image as soon as possible. Her color isn't quite as glowing yellow as the right side (full view) photo shows. I'm still on the uphill side of this camera's learning curve and I couldn't quite color correct it… I know chestnut colors make buyers nervous so I promise she's a priority for a "glamour shots" session (and I'll probably do a rare thing and take some outside photos now that I can do this in my new home!). Remaining work on her is primarily hoof and mane/tail detailing work.
SOLD! (Exceptional offer received so I will not be taking any further offers on this gal)

Black roan tobiano (tovero?) with sabino and other bells and whistles Hazel
(above)
I base coated this gal and then took her to a show as a prop horse this past spring. I knew I wouldn't have the time to paint her before I moved but when she got her she got cleaned off a lot and then has gotten a few earnest coats of oils now. She's going to have those wee tiny penciling details hopefully when I'm done. It remains to be seen if I'll get to both sides before Breyerfest. The ones I'd done earlier were cleaned off before the oils went down though, I was experimenting a little, I admit it! In the end I think I'd like to go somewhat more contrasty with some of the blacker hairs as often the highly blended ones just are overlooked.. I'd like to give her a mixture of both to encourage viewers to look closer and closer but also not to look so wishy washy from a distance. Not that Hazel herself is all that dull of a gal but you know what I mean! :) Updated July 10th with picture of new lip spot and closer detail on the roaning hairs in progress. Hazel in Dapple Bay
(above)
This is the first time I've been able to put this color down on Hazel or any horse for that matter - but I sincerely think it really suits her. I've got maybe one more layer of oils or so to balance a few things up but from here on in she's mostly going to get white details worked out. The right hand photo is definitely more contrasty that she looks in most lighting however she is a contrasty bay, where that sooty gene thing is possibly in there and I'm not touching that genetic supposition with a 10 foot pole! I have some terrific reference photos of this color I can pass along to the buyer as well.

bitty bosco in dapple golden goodness
(left)

Updated July 10th, adding in sabino markings and some detail now he's really coming together. I'm not having much luck photographing his color accurately still though - I've done over 6 layers of oil paint dapples to get the effect I was hoping for. He's really one you must see in person! :)

Previous description; This fellow was really hoping he could get more chocolate colored before Breyerfest. The photos really were not the best here but he's all over dappling there.. My white balance also washed out the details of it but the face and legs are a little jaggedy edged and the stockings extend up beyond the knees and hocks. (These last 3 pics don't enlarge, I was done playing with my new camera by this point and these were the best I got which isn't saying much) ;)
Current highest offer $350 (KM)

Now here's a fellow that also wants to be like the Hazel above, roany minute details all over! As with that Hazel, it remains to be seen how much will be done in time for Breyerfest.. these may be the horses that you see me working on and who have little "in progress" signs next to them as I've done before at shows. I do wish at least the oil paint blended patterns showed up a little but better to spend the time I guess working on the horse than on the pictures right now..! ;)

Flitwick, the pony of a different color
(left)
Last but not least is a Flitwick who was nearly ready a few years ago and I found some missed seams that really needed filling (the right way, stripping and painting over). I was so dismayed then, and he was turning kinda too orange so I held off and set him aside. Well he's been reprepped, he's getting paler in a silver red dun sort of way, and his very intricate little blanket there on his rump seems like it doesn't have to be completely redone. I know the picture doesn't show it at all but his blanket is very lacey edged. So woohoo he's getting his second wind! I know a few folks had asked about him back when I first showed him off but that was so long ago and I'm not sure I have your emails anymore (I know I had to a get a new computer since then).. Anyhow, look for him to be there at Breyerfest too!
